| Introduction: |
I already have more eye protection than I'll ever need. The
models I had before consisted of both a paintball mask and
tactical goggles, and I can highly recommend both (they are
reviewed here as well). However, I knew that many players
have shown and voiced a dislike for the bulky nature of masks
and full size goggles. Many times these players would resort
to wearing simple shooting or safety glasses. This tends to
upset me a lot. I have reason to be upset (A reason I wont
get into here) when it comes to people not taking the best
possible options for eye protection. Well when Wiley-X first
came out with their SG1 line of tactical goggle/glasses, I
was happy and sure that all those who were currently wearing
inadequate protection would jump on them... they didn't. Early
reviews of the SG1's stated that they had major issues with
fogging. Soon after the SG1 V-cut lenses came out, which were
supposed to alleviate the fogging issue, and many players
did start wearing them, but many still had fogging issues
to deal with requiring the use of chemical anti fog materials.
Now comes the Wiley-X CQC goggle. One that was specifically
designed using feedback from actual operators on the front
lines. They have improved venting over the SG1 Vcuts, and
a larger field of view. I purchased a pair of these from Airsoft
Arms specifically to review them, in the hopes that I can
convince more players who currently wont wear full seal goggles,
to opt for these less cumbersome, very stylish, and ultimately
safer goggles.

| From the
Manufacturer's description: |
Having worked closely with the 82nd and 101st ABN we consider
ourselves experts in designing functional goggles for all
ABN conditions. The new CQC goggle is an excellent jump goggle.
It's streamlined design cuts through the wind and fits the
face closely and tightly.
Our CQC goggle can be worn with its strap, under the helmet,
which greatly improves fit and comfort. This also improves
vision as the goggle is designed to sit very close to the
face. Our new CQC goggle (along with our SG-1 design) can
even be worn with night vision
The Wiley X CQC goggle uses our exclusive "Ultra
Foam" seal which is far more durable than traditional
foam and much more comfortable than the rubber ridge used
by competitors
The CQC goggle comes equipped with 2 sets (neutral slate /
clear) of ballistic polycarbonate. Each lens is 2.5mm thick
and clear coated with our proprietary anti-fog solution giving
the user perfect, unobstructed vision. Add our silicone, scratch
resistant coating and you have the best optical quality, ballistic
lenses available

| What comes in the box: |
The Wiley-X box contains, one set
of Wiley-X CQC goggles with the removable glasses temples attached,
a goggle strap, installed slate gray lenses, spare clear lenses,
a lens installation instruction card, and a soft protective
case.
|
| Attaching the Strap: |
For some reason, these "Goggles" come set up in
their sunglasses configuration. It is very easy to remove
the temples and attach the strap. All you do is push in on
a little tab on the inside of the temple (where it attaches
to the frame) and pull it apart. Then you simply push the
corresponding ends of the strap into the same place till they
"click" The Strap is adjustable enough to fit even
the fattest of heads.
|
| Visual Clarity: |
The lenses on these goggles are crystal clear. I have not
been able to detect any distortion caused by the curve of
the lens at all. Also, wearing these goggles has very little
obstruction to peripheral vision at all. In fact, you can
barely even see the corners of the frames at all, even if
you try. The nose bridge also is very unobstructive. Its basically
like wearing wrap around glasses as far as far as that goes.
|
| Fogging performance: |
At this time I have not had a chance to test these in the
field for fogging response. I have read on some forums that
people HAVE had a fogging problem with the CQC's. I wonder
though if I will, because NONE of the eye protection I have
used has fogged, other than the JT single lens goggles I used
in my paintball days.
I DID wear these during a cardio workout, just to get myself
heated up and sweating, to see if they would fog. They didn't
fog, but that is not an accurate test for how they would perform
out in the field.
These facts in mind, I will have to update this review once
I have had a chance to wear these out in the field. I have
it on good authority though, that if they do have a fogging
issue, there is a great anti fog material sold at Airsoft
Arms called FogTech
|
| Impact testing: |
I took the goggles with the slate gray lenses installed,
which I probably wont use in skirmishes, and did a 1.5 joule
(400 fps with .20) point blank impact test. I shot the lenses
at 5 different points including at the top where the vent
holes are. The shots did not even leave a mark... not one.
I also, just for comparison, shot a pair of Smith and Wesson
shooting glasses. It cracked the lens on the first shot...
So much for those... Never mind the fact that bbs shot from
the sides or from rear flanks can get in on the sides, they
CRACKED!
Don't play games with your eyes for the sake of comfort boys
and girls... Pay good money for good protection.
|
| Comfort: |
I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that wearing these
with the strap are as comfortable as glasses. They aren't,
but I can say they are the MOST comfortable GOGGLES I have
ever worn. The vented seal (That you can see in the picture
above) is soft enough to be comfortable, and hard enough not
to completely compress under the pressure of the strap.
|
| Available upgrade paths: |
At this time the only available lens replacements are the
clear and slate gray. This is the only negative I have found
for these goggles, I would like to have gotten some yellow
lenses.
You can also buy replacement straps, temples, frames and side
shields. They also have a hard case you can buy that holds
the goggles AND several spare lenses.
|
| Conclusion: |
For those of you who don't like full
face protection (for whatever reason) OR don't like the bulky
nature of full tactical goggles like those available from Bolle
or ESS, these Wiley X CQCs will be like a god send. I have yet
to test any of the main competitors to this brand (there are
others, such as the Body Specs BSG1, also sold at Airsoft Arms)
but I can safely say that these are an awesome choice for Airsoft
EYE protection. I highly recommend that you wear a balaclava
with these whenever possible, just to have a minimum amount
of protection for your face, ears, mouth and nose. |
