Introduction:

A long 3 months of attempting to make a gun purchase left me in a daze. Being a huge HK buff, I originally opted for an MP5, however the G3 series had caught my eye. My original plans were to purchase a G3 SG1. However, after learning that they were a somewhat older model, I chose the G3 SAS.

The G3 SAS out of the box is a really a rather small gun compared to the other models (SG1, A3, A4, and PSG/1) in Marui's G3 lineup. When I purchased the G3 I also ordered my suppressor. I was rather unimpressed with its build quality, the exterior of the suppressor is just a 40mm aluminum tube. The interior is made up of a series of foam "donuts". The first time I shot the gun with the suppressor on the bb's bounced off the interior's foam, and shot foam all over. Not too cool. However, when I took off the suppressor, I was surprised as to how loud the gun actually was without it. No foam has been shot out since, I use the silencer more often than not.

Operation: Hop up adjustment: The hop up adjustment wheel is in the same location on this replica as it is on most Tokyo Marui AEGs. Inside the "breech". To access the wheel you have to pull back on the charging handle to open the breech. Hop up adjustment is really quite simple, and it's really nice to be able to adjust it on the fly.

Magazines Fit and Function:
The mag that comes with the G3 is a 500rnd Hi-Cap. Now, personally I would have rather had a Lo-cap, but my increasingly low budget gave me no other choice than what came with the gun. The mag is a standard marui Hi-Cap, wind the wheel till it makes the weird clicky noise and you are good to go. The hi-cap was rather beneficial at a recent skirmish I attended. I went through maybe 5 mags the whole op. I will be purchasing the 70rnd Lo-caps marui sells in the near future.

Trigger Fire Selector: The G3 SAS has the new pictograph HK selector rather than the old S, E, F, the other G3's have. The switch is metal and it is real easy to switch. Non-ambidextrous however, so beware if you are picky about that.

Battery: The G3 SAS is designed to use the "Mini type" 7 cell, 8.4 volt, 600 Mah batteries. I recieved one with my gun from UNcompany, and I also purchased an extra one with a Marui discharger from poweredgeusa.com I was really rather impressed with the batteries. One charge will last a really long time. Just in case it does run out, I have the extra.

Vertical Hand Grip: I purchased a vertical hand grip from aggressive sports in Joliet. The quality of this grip really impressed me. It is solid metal with a very thick coating of rubber all around it, unlike the all plastic grips you see on every M4 (which everyone has, so that's a lot of crappy vertical grips)

Stock FPS, Range and Accuracy: I chrono'd my gun in at the last op at 255 fps out of the box. Not too impressive, however the accuracy and range are outstanding for a stock gun. Considering it has the same motor as the m4, it has no difficulty keeping up with one (in stock form of course). I plan on purchasing a spring a bushings in the near future.
Upgrades: All cosmetic (Head 1950 245x 40mm suppressor, Classic Army G3 SG/1 Stock, Vertical Tactical Grip)

I stated my view on the suppressor and the grip before, but let me talk a little bit about the stock. It rocks. There are several styles of stocks to choose from, I chose the sg1 because I love the look of a long stock gun with a short barrel. The quality of the stock is present as it is in a lot of classic army parts. I really like it and I would not pick either of the other stocks (folding, slither, psg1)
Durability: No durability problems are present with this gun. It is straight up solid, the quality is amazing.
Available upgrade paths: The G3 SAS comes with a RIS rail on the bottom of the front end. More rails may be purchased for the sides, (G36C rails are the same) from DEN. Other upgrades include anything you could pretty much think of. I mean its a TM so everything is there for it. Laylax has just produced a tight bore barrel for the SAS under its Prometheus label. I will be purchasing one of these in the near future and a review will be up for it with shot groupings. A top rail is also available for the SAS that runs down the top of the gun, it really improves the looks of the G3 and makes a sight easily available for installation. If a rail system isn't what you want then the Marui Claw mount for the G3/MP5 will also fit on it, personally I do not care for its looks.
Conclusion: The G3 SAS kicks some serious bootay! I really really love this AEG. It is an absolute solid performer, with options a plenty. Excellent gun for anyone who plays multiple styles, as you can add/take off a stock whenever necessary. The EG1000 makes the range equivalent to that of an m4. The perfect gun for a beginner or an avid player as well. I highly recommend this gun to any beginner as it is so upgrade-able, you can get it to fit your exact needs.
